Handout from Stake Relief Society Mini Class
Let your Light So Shine
Through Creative Scripture Study
Why do we need to develop a game plan when it comes to scripture reading?
• When you fail to plan you plan to fail!
• John 14: 23-24 tells us to keep the words of Christ, it also tells us that “He that loveth me not, keepeth not my saying” – when we readeth and esteemeth not we are indifferent towards Christ. This scripture denotes a spiritual formula:
o Love of Christ = Love of his words
o Indifference to scripture = Indifference to Christ
Family Scripture Study Ideas:
In holding regular family prayer & scripture study, Elder Bednar noted that, “The consistency of our intent and work was perhaps the greatest lesson, a lesson we did not fully appreciate at the time.” (November 2009 Ensign, pg 19)
• Consistency is easier when you have more willing participants. We should make an effort to get our children actively engaged in scripture study.
o What are their interests? How can I marry that with the scriptures?
o Make your scripture study visible. (butcher paper journey, charts, graphs, scripture mastery posters)
o Make the scriptures come alive. Put together a model ship (during Nephi), dress up as characters, put on a play, bind arms with strong cords as Nephi was bound (momentarily of course!).
o Come up with fun scripture mastery games or contests as a family!
o Hold your own scriptural Olympics, with different events.
Personal Scripture Study Ideas:
Make yourself a roadmap or timetable. It’s easier to take time for ourselves when we have a schedule and we are already planning on it.
Look at the scriptures from a different viewpoint and new things will stand out in a way that we haven’t thought of before.
Read the scriptures with a specific topic in mind.
• Christ Centered Reading
• Repentance
• Faith
• Blessings
• Parenting
• Charity
• Obedience/ Commandments
